I want to say something clearly that most people in this conversation are dancing around.
What is happening to workers in AI-driven industries right now follows the same pattern this country has repeated across its entire history.
Extract the labor. Build the wealth on top of it. Discard the source when something cheaper or more efficient becomes available. Deny the contributor any share of what their contribution built.
African Americans built the physical and economic foundation of this country. The labor was taken. The wealth was kept. When the system no longer needed them in the same way it found legal and political mechanisms to push them aside.
Undocumented immigrants are doing the physical labor that keeps entire industries running today. Meatpacking. Agriculture. Construction. Garment manufacturing. They are told they are essential right up until the political calculus changes. Then they are told they do not belong here.
Now skilled workers across every industry are having their physical expertise harvested to train AI models that will replace them. No ownership. No equity. No acknowledgment that what they contributed had commercial value.
Same pattern. Different century. Different technology. Same extraction.
I have spent over 20 years in operations accounting. I have worked inside construction companies, insurance restoration firms, manufacturers, and retailers. I have watched workers give everything.
Not as a metaphor
I mean they gave their time. The hours away from their children that they cannot get back. They gave their health. The repetitive stress injuries, the back problems, the chronic pain that comes from doing the same physical motion thousands of times over years. I mean, they gave their identity. Because for many of the people I have worked alongside, the work is not just what they do. It is who they are.
I watched sewing operators at a high-end garment manufacturer in work with a level of precision that no performance review could quantify. Their hands knew things their words could not fully describe. That knowledge lives in their muscle memory. It was built over years of showing up.
That knowledge is exactly what AI companies need to build the next generation of models.
And those workers will receive nothing from that transaction unless someone builds the framework that changes it.
We are at the point in history where we can choose a different outcome.
We are also at the point where if we do not choose deliberately and urgently, the default outcome will repeat the pattern.
I am not writing this series to be provocative. I am writing it because I have witnessed enough to know that the time for a measured, careful, wait-and-see approach has already passed.
The workers doing the physical labor that trains the AI replacing them need to organize, demand equity, and refuse to allow their expertise to be harvested without compensation. Before the simulation is complete. Before the model is deployed. Before it is too late to be part of the negotiation.
This is labor equity. And it is time to call it what it is.
